NEW DELHI: Instagram has announced that it is discontinuing its Snapchat like messaging app ‘Threads’. According to a report by TechCrunch, Instagram will no longer support Threads by the end of December. The report adds that users will start seeing an in-app notification about the shutdown on the app from November 23.
The discontinuation of the Threads app was first spotted by engineer Alessandro Paluzzi. He posted about the discontinuation screenshot for the first time showing the notice from Instagram.
As mentioned above Instagram introduced the Threads app in October 2019 on Android and iOS operating systems. The app shared some similarities with Snapchat and allowed users to share their photos and videos with their close friends.
Instagram has not yet revealed the reason behind the shutdown of the app.
Meanwhile, Instagram has started testing a new feature that allows users to add music to their feed posts, something similar to Reels and Instagram Stories. India is among the very few countries where the company is testing the feature. The other two are Brazil and Turkey.
With this feature, Instagram plans to give its users a way to add a soundtrack to their Feed photos. The support to add music is already available in Instagram Stories and Instagram Reels. However, while on Reels users post short videos; Instagram Stories disappear after 24 hours. There is no expiry for Instagram feed posts. According to the company, this feature is being tested with a small percentage of Instagram’s global community and expanded based on the learning and feedback from the Instagram community.
